A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national projects.
