Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
